World Humanitarian Day (WHD) 2021

Today, August 19, 2021, is designated in memory of the August 19, 2003 bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killing 22 people, including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly formalized the day as WHD.

WHD is a global celebration of people helping people. It is intended to raise public awareness of humanitarian assistance worldwide, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

Today, I would like us to celebrate and dedicate this year’s WHD to our “ People’s First Mayor”, Chief Hon. Ifeanyi Pascal Agu (Nwachinemelu ), the Executive Chairman of Udi LGA. Hon. Agu upon assumption of office, was confronted by the novel Corona Virus Disease 2021 (COVID-19) but he courageously responded squarely to the socio-economic impact of COVID-19 in Udi LGA. Hon. Agu took the bull by the horn, he strategically set-up and inaugurated the Udi LGA COVID-19 Steering Committee on May 1, 2020. This gesture made him the first amongst equals and contemporaries across the 774 LGAs in the country. He was at the forefront of mobilizing financial and material resources from various good-spirited sons and daughters of Udi. Hon. Ifeanyi Agu was leading from the front with his personal donations and that of others whom we may not list their names here but the God Almighty knows each and everyone of you, and would reward all the benefactors according to their heart desires. He sacrificed his life for his people and was at the frontline with the Udi COVID-19 Response Team presenting palliatives to the needy in various communities across party-line and religious sects including the Hausa community and non-indigenes residing in Udi LGA.
Hon. Ifeanyi Agu through the supports of every Udi philanthropist reached about 5,000 households, including persons with disabilities, orphanages and the elderly. In efforts to cushion the hardships exacerbated by COVID-19, Udi LGA in partnership with the Baywood Foundation empowered 200 youths in household skills under the Youth ICT and Skill Program (YISAP) with support from Coca-Cola Foundation.

We are profoundly thankful for all your supports. Yes, we can still do grater works with your untiring supports and with the Udi Smart City Mayor, the Udi LGA shall continue to put smiles on the faces of the weak, needy – touching lives and reaching the unreached for more dignifying lives.

The Udi LGA remains resolute to saving lives, providing succor to the poorest of the poor, responding to emergency situations and natural disasters, and strengthening collaborative partnerships with individual philanthropist and development partners.

Thank you!!!
